Every recipe has a story, every flavor carries a memory…Foods we enjoy are inspired by the people we love, places we live, and a lifestyle that moves us. I guess you could say, my culinary journey through life has always been a little on the wild side.
Hi, and welcome! I’m Janet, lover of outdoor/rustic cooking, ex-river guide and ski instructor, scuba enthusiast and resident of Alaska. I’m married to Jeff, who’s an outdoor junkie too. Our five kids and three dogs round out the family.
I love the flavors of foods cooked over an open fire, grilled, smoked or baked in cast iron using ingredients like fresh seafood, berries and sourdough. The smell, taste and enjoyment of procuring, preparing and eating delicious rustic dishes takes me back to some of my earliest memories.
One of the fondest is of a crackling fire, the fresh smell of the forest and laughter with cousins as we reveled in a family reunion of fishing, camping, and food. My favorite times were the evening campfires. We sat sipping cocoa while grandparents and parents cooked classic Dutch oven chicken with potatoes and peach cobbler, or grilled fish caught fresh that day from Panguitch Lake in Utah. Those were perfect moments experienced through the eyes of a 4 year old.
It’s a scene that’s been similarly played out many times through a lifetime love affair with cooking and being outside, while sharing it with family and friends. Half a century has now passed, the journey manifested by weathered hands, scars, wrinkled skin, and bleached, graying hair. But also, through wonderful memories of good food, love, and post card perfect scenes in nature.
Baking Wild IS a lifestyle, and it continues to blend together perfectly here in AK. Alaska is the ideal place to forage, fish, camp, backpack, kayak (you get the picture) and EAT! Trust me, it doesn’t get much wilder than the Last Frontier! And, I love sharing recipes and stories inspired by the culinary and geographical diversity of The Great Land.
About Baking Wild
As I mentioned food and outdoor cooking are a big part of our lives. Plus, as a registered dietitian/home ec. major, and Jeff being a closet gourmet; preparing good rustic grub comes naturally!
We’ve cooked and camped our way through the western USA, Hawaii, Canada, Caribbean and AK. You have to eat right? So we learned to bake with equipment, and ingredients common to the region we’re in. Wild baking can take place anywhere you are. From a secluded beach on the Big Island, to red rock canyons on the Colorado river, in the untamed backcountry of Alaska, and even on the backyard BBQ: if it’s wild to you, it’s golden!
But outdoor cooking isn’t the only goal of ‘Baking Wild’. It’s to show those folks who just tuned out when I mentioned ‘open fire’ and ‘Dutch oven’ that these methods and flavors are sooo easy to achieve inside! In fact, the recipes include tips for outdoors, and indoors.
Finally, these pages are a place to share family recipes and traditions, along with good times outside and beautiful Alaska. An online journal so to speak that’s a comfortable browse for family and friends.
Thanks for Stopping By
